Did you do anything for UN World Environment Day? Is your city green?

World Environment Day

June 5th (Sunday in 2005) is UN World Environment Day (the first was in 1972). This year the main event took place in San Francisco from 1-5 June and the theme was "Green Cities". Events included:

  • Green Buildings Worldwide Online, presented by San Francisco Department of the Environment
  • Green Building Keynote: The "Not So Big" New Urbanism - Sarah Susanka and Andrés Duany
  • Metreon Global Sight & Sound, presented by Project Ahimsa
  • The Renewable Energy Leadership Summit: Policy, Technology and Financing
  • United Nations Environment's Children's Painting Competition Exhibit

There was a different theme each day:

  • Pure elements: food, water and air
  • Redesigning the metropolis: recycling, green building and smart growth
  • Cities on the move: transportation
  • Urban power: energy, renewables and energy conservation
  • Flower power: open space, biodiversity and greening the urban environment

Mayors from over 50 cities all over the world came for a number of programs and workshops. They have the power to push through changes, for example London's congestion charge aimed at reducing road traffic in the city. They can be more flexible than governments, yet still have the purchasing power to make a difference. They are accountable to their citizens. They can learn from each others' experiences, yet adapt them to the challenges of their own unique cities.

Last week the United Nations Environmental Programme (Unep) produced, with the aid of other agencies, One Planet Many People: Atlas of our Changing Environment. This shows uses satellite images to show just how much we have changed parts of Earth over the past few decades.

On Sunday, people all over the world staged events to mark the day. They held rallies, planted trees, held festivals and staged clean-ups.

World marks green day; UN warns of booming cities

June 5 is World Environment Day, and this year's focus worldwide was on "greener" planning for cities. Cities marked the day in a variety of ways.

London Mayor Urges All to Try Traffic Fee

Speaking at the United Nations World Environment Day Conference, Mayor Ken Livingstone of London recommended that other cities follow London's lead in introducing a congestion charge to reduce traffic in busy areas. This would help reduce global warming as well as unhealthy pollution.
